Frederick the field mouse lives with his family in an old stone wall. In the fall, all the mice begin to gather supplies for the winter. Only Frederick seems to do nothing the whole time. He just sits there while the busy mice around him work busily and hectically. But Frederick is also very busy. He observes his surroundings very closely, sees, smells, hears and gathers his own special supplies. He collects sunbeams and colors against the grey of winter and words for the many long winter days.
Winter comes and the mouse family retreats into their cave. Gradually, the supplies they have collected run out. It is getting cold, the mice are freezing and they are running out of things to talk about. So Frederick takes out his treasures. He talks about the warm rays of the sun, the colors of the flowers, the songs of the birds. Frederick's words warm the mice, whisk them away to the land of memories and dreams and then winter is over again.
A physical, clownish and musical-rhythmic approach enables an entertaining and deep understanding of the performance for our young and old audience members: freely adapted from the picture book by Leo Lionni.
