Aiming high in the Hängender Stein climbing garden
An adventure in Nüziders
"Rope? Check! Climbing harness, shoes, helmet, quickdraws? It's all there!" The enthusiasm is palpable as we make our way to the Hängender Stein climbing garden in Nüziders, equipped to the tips of our toes. We are greeted by a cool, clear June morning, the perfect invitation for a climbing adventure.
The short trip from Bludenz to Nüziders already reveals the imposing "Köpfle" from afar, a landmark of the climbing garden that stretches boldly and freely into the sky. A small flag can be seen on its top - a destination that beckons from afar, but can only be reached via multi-pitch routes.
Arriving at the foot of the climbing garden, I am greeted by Anna and Angelina, two experienced sport climbers and my companions for the day. Being under their wing as a beginner puts me at ease, especially in view of the challenge that lies ahead.
In contrast to via ferratas, which are equipped with fixed steel ropes and climbing aids, the sport climbing garden requires a different kind of preparation: your own safety technique and the right know-how are essential. More than 250 routes, hidden in the forest and along the natural rock band, are waiting to be conquered. A graphical representation of the routes, the topo, is essential to get an overview of the levels of difficulty and the necessary safety equipment.
Our adventure begins in one of the rear sectors with a route called "Kurs", ideal for a newcomer like me. Under Angelina's expert guidance and Anna's steadying hand, I make my first attempts at climbing. The experience of finding my own way, free of artificial climbing aids, is new and exciting. Despite my initial uncertainty, I soon find my rhythm, encouraged by the shouts of my companions.
My self-confidence grows with each route: from "Wanderfalke" to "Betthupferl", a route that doesn't deserve its name as the start promises anything but a gentle slumber. But the support of my companions helps me to overcome this hurdle too.
The highlight of the day is the multi-pitch climbing. Even though I'm not belaying myself today, the experience of being part of a rope team and conquering the wall together is incomparable. The confidence I have in the equipment and in my partners allows me to fully immerse myself in the experience.
Exhausted but fulfilled, I end my day in the climbing garden. I feel the physical exertion, but the joy of what I have achieved is worth it . To see Anna and Angelina climbing the "Köpfle" reinforces my desire to come back and reach the summit myself one day.
The "Hängender Stein" climbing garden in Nüziders offers a unique experience for anyone longing for a new challenge with its diverse routes and the possibility of multi-pitch climbing. Important: The adventure should always be started with experienced climbers who have the expertise. The Alpenverein and mountain guides offer courses and guided tours.
