The first time on a downhill bike: a day full of adrenaline and family bonding
An adventure awaits us at the Bikepark Brandnertal: a beginner's course in downhill biking. Wearing helmets and full armor and under the guidance of our guide Pasquale, we, a sports-loving family, are ready for a new challenge. While I, still inexperienced in the field, start with mixed feelings, my three men - my husband and our two sons - are full of anticipation.
First, we learn the basics on a gravel parking lot: the right way to brake, the feeling for the bike. Uncertainty slowly gives way to fun. Pasquale patiently introduces us, explains, reminds us to be careful and motivates us. We soon tackle the first steep bends and discover the indescribable feeling of downhill biking - the flow, the feeling of being one with the bike and nature.
The lift ride up, the view of the route, it all gives you a tingling sensation. The first descents are a mix of thrills and learning. Every bend, every hill takes us further and makes us feel more confident. The initial skepticism gives way to enthusiasm. It's not just the sport itself, it's the shared experience that counts. Our boys, already experienced mountain bikers, are not shy and challenge me.
Then the Northshores - narrow wooden paths that present a completely new challenge. One mistake and I end up off the track, but that's part of it. You learn to look ahead, anticipate the route and laugh when things don't go perfectly.
With every run we feel more comfortable, the routes become more familiar, the fear gives way to adrenaline and the joy of doing things. The final runs not only bring speed, but also a deep sense of satisfaction. We have mastered it together, we have surpassed ourselves.
Back at the hotel, while the boys enjoy their triumph, I reflect. The bruises are proof enough: I have risen to the challenge. This day in the bikepark was more than just a sporting adventure; it was proof of courage, team spirit and the joy of shared experiences. A day that shows that family and sport are a great combination - and that it's worth breaking new ground.
