Spirkenwälder Brandnertal European nature reserve: a refuge for nature

On the dry, extremely steep dolomite slopes and debris flows in the Brandnertal, spirks form sparse forest stands. The spruce (Pinus uncinata), also known as the hooked pine, grows slowly and defies extreme conditions. In the light-flooded, inaccessible forest areas on the southern slope below the Daleukopf, there are many thermophilic and rare animal and plant species such as the three-toed woodpecker, snow rose and dwarf box. A total of four European nature reserves have been established in the Rätikon to protect the largest Vorarlberg populations and around half of the Austrian population of the rare spirke. They are intended to ensure the continued existence of this fascinating type of forest, which is adapted to extreme nutrient poverty and drought.

Rätikon mountain group

Once a border region with a turbulent history, today a well-known hiking and climbing area where alpine milestones are set. The Rätikon is where the borders of Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Austria meet. In times of war, it was a cruel arena between life and death, later smugglers and muleteers made use of the crossings, today alpine history is being written here. The Rätikon with its highest peak, the Schesaplana (2,965 m), is one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the Eastern Alps. Rock formations, rugged walls and steep ridges, such as the Kirchlispitzen, challenge climbing pros like Beat Kammerlander and Barbara Zangerl time and time again - the Rätikon is therefore the preferred region for the best of the best in alpine climbing. But the Rätikon not only has a lot to offer climbing legends: Striking peaks such as the Schesaplana, the Sulzfluh or the famous Drei Türme attract numerous mountain enthusiasts. More leisurely high-altitude trails and easier hiking tours below the peaks delight hikers and nature lovers.
