On the cross-country ski trail through the winter landscape
Interview with Max Sturm about cross-country skiing in Brandnertal
Cross-country skiing is a sport that has become increasingly popular in recent years. It is not only an effective full-body workout, but also an opportunity to experience winter nature intensively. Brandnertal offers the perfect conditions for this. We talk to Max Sturm, a passionate cross-country skier, who explains why cross-country skiing is so special to him, what makes the Brandnertal so special and what tips he has for a perfect day on the trails.
Why do you enjoy cross-country skiing so much?
I can go cross-country skiing at any time and with relatively little effort. Drive to the trail, put on your equipment, warm up and off you go. It's probably the sport that really works all parts of the body and is still easy on the joints. After just an hour or so on the trail, I feel recharged.
What makes the sport special?
You're out in nature and can set the pace and intensity yourself. One day I simply enjoy the tranquillity of nature and run at my own pace, the next day I focus fully on my athletic training.
Cross-country skiing in Brandnertal: What makes it so special for you?
Depending on the snow conditions, there is a short trail in Brand, right next to most hotels. The main trail is located on the Tschengla high plateau in Bürserberg at an altitude of 1,250 meters and offers a fantastic panorama.
What can I experience here that I might not get elsewhere?
In Brandnertal, you get a combination of an impressive panorama and perfectly groomed cross-country ski trails for classic and skating. There is also a groomed hiking trail up to the Rona Alpe, which is ideal for meeting up with family or friends. The Rona Alpe is located directly on the cross-country ski trail and offers toilets and benches - an ideal opportunity for a break.
What cross-country ski trails are there in Brandnertal?
The Olympia trail on the Tschengla is 5.5 kilometers long and prepared for classic and skating. The first part is rather flat, the second part slightly hilly. The trail is classified as "blue", i.e. easy. The trail in Brand is rather flat and a few kilometers long, depending on the snow conditions.
What is your favorite trail and do you have a favorite spot along the route?
My favorite trail is the Olympia trail on the Tschengla. On the first kilometer you have a great panorama towards Zimba and Arlberg. The trail then leads through a beautiful section of forest. It is particularly worth pausing for a moment at the turning point to enjoy the snow-covered surroundings. In the lower section, you have a sweeping view of the Walgau region, the Große Walsertal and the fascinating stone circles.
Your tips for a perfect day of cross-country skiing in Brandnertal?
A good day starts with a nutritious breakfast - muesli or wholemeal bread, for example. You should warm up on the trail before setting off. A short break is advisable after one or two laps. Don't forget to drink in between and change into dry clothes after cross-country skiing.
What advice do you have for beginners?
I recommend taking a beginners' course to learn the basics of cross-country skiing properly. It's best to start with the classic technique and switch to skating later if necessary.
