In autumn 2023, a new via ferrata was created on the Wandfluh in Sonntag-Stein, in the northern Lechquellengebirge mountains, in the "Bergsteigerdorf" Großes Walsertal. This medium-difficulty via ferrata with difficulty level C not only offers a sporting challenge, but also rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views of the Großes Walsertal Biosphere Park.
The official opening of the via ferrata is planned for Saturday, 08 June 2024 at 10:00 am.
The starting point is the mountain station of the Sonntag-Stein cable car in the Großes Walsertal biosphere reserve. From the Sonntag-Stein cable car mountain station, follow the road for approx. 30 minutes - past the barbecue area - then follow the road to the right until you reach the "Klettergarten" signs. From there, follow a short forest path to the start.
The start in the grass-covered rock is not too difficult. On the first 70 meters you will find a step bar and there are one or two steep climbs to prepare you for the upper sections. This is followed by a nice traverse under the large overhang. This is also not too difficult, the rock becomes more alpine and in some places you have to look for the footholds. Your arms are really challenged for the first time. It becomes more exposed. At the edge of the pillar, the route goes up again. Here you climb on solid rock again, it gets steep and you have to look for the footholds and sometimes also the handholds on the rock. A small, natural traverse leads to the last upswing in the steep rock, which is defused with footholds. After a few meters in a gully comes the final third of the tour. Here you follow the steel cable, partly on tracks and partly in the rock.
The via ferrata exit is located just below the Wandfluh viewpoint. From there, a hiking trail leads back to the start or slightly uphill to Partnum, from where you follow the hiking trail for approx. 40 minutes back to the Sonntag-Stein cable car mountain station.
