Alpe Formarin
A strong team in the Zugertal
Alpe Formarin is located at the end of the Zugertal , close to Lake Formarin. The 125-kilometre-long Lech river, which is also the starting point of the Lechweg trail - a hiking trail that takes hikers on a special journey along the river - has its source in front of the alpine hut at 1,871 meters above sea level. During the day, it is very busy with hikers and bikers, but despite the crowds, the Alpe retains its charm.
Daniel and Lara have been managing Alpe Formarin together since summer 2024. They met at Alpe Spora in Montafon: he was a shepherd, she was a cook. This encounter developed into a partnership - both professionally and privately. They are supported by Lara's eleven-year-old nephew Aurel.
A typical day for the three of them starts early, often as early as 6:00. The animals have to be counted and inspected every day, even on a rainy and windy morning like today. Almost 200 cattle graze on the extensive pastures of the Alpe. With a practiced eye, Daniel and Aurel check the health of the animals twice a day, covering up to 30 kilometers and 1,700 meters in altitude - a strenuous but fulfilling day.
Meanwhile, Lara looks after the guests sitting in front of the hut. In addition to providing hospitality, she attaches great importance to explaining the importance of alpine life and agriculture to visitors. She explains where the milk comes from and how it is processed. Hardly anything has changed in the way they serve food and drink: Washing up is done by hand, there is no dishwasher, drinks are served in bottles and you won’t find any e-bike charging stations here.
Working on the Alpe is a real family project. When relatives come to visit, everyone pitches in - whether it's baking cakes, washing up or looking after the animals. For the young shepherd Aurel, it is a summer full of challenges, but also full of adventure.
Daniel and Lara are planning to return to Alpe Formarin next summer. Then perhaps even with a few cows in the barn so that they can show guests even better how dairy products are made.
