Christian Melmer

Ski school manager and sheep farmer

Christian Melmer lives in Klostertal, more precisely in Dalaas. He spends a lot of the year outdoors in nature. As a ski school manager and sheep farmer, he combines two worlds that seem different at first glance. He is out in nature with his guests on the Sonnenkopf or the Arlberg in winter, as well as with his sheep in summer.

His 20 "Klostertal forest sheeps" belong to a protected original breed, and for Christian they are exactly what he was looking for: "Healthy, robust animals that feel at home on the slopes of our pastures, whatever the weather." In the evening, when the last rays of sun touch the mountains of the Arlberg, Christian is out with his animals. He checks that they are well and healthy, that they have enough water and enough grasses and herbs to eat. When the pastures become barren, he moves on with his herd.

As soon as the first snowflakes fall, Christian swaps his work clothes for the red ski suit of the Klostertal ski school. As ski school manager and ski instructor, he shares his skills and enthusiasm for skiing with his guests. "The motto of our ski school is: learning with fun - fun through learning," he explains. Christian often likes to guide his guests through deep snow slopes and to unknown places, giving tips on safety and the right technique and in between telling stories about the Klostertal and Arlberg mountains, which he has known since his childhood.

When asked what drives him, Christian answers: "Enthusiasm for nature."

Enthusiasm for nature is what keeps me going.
