The Alpe Spullers - Dalaaser Staffel
Open doors and an open house
Alpe Spullers, better known as "Dalaaser Spullers", is located in Spullertal, between Zugertal and Lake Spullersee. From the hut, the view opens up to the impressive Spuller Schafberg.
Here, everyday life in the Alps follows an intense rhythm, characterized by work and a strong sense of community. The working days are long and demanding. Just driving the cows out to pasture in the morning and bringing them back to the barn in the evening takes up to an hour and a half. But the work is carried out with dedication, as Conny and Christian, the tenants of the alp, live here every summer. They have been spending time here together for over 20 years, and for Christian it is like a second home, his "real home", as he says.
The hut is often a hive of activity, and this Saturday lunchtime is no exception. Many guests are sitting at the tables, enjoying the sun and the view. Conny and her 14-year-old helper Aurelia take care of the catering. Regular guests, including farmers who come to look after their animals, create a family atmosphere. Meanwhile, Christian sits at the table with friends. They chat about alpine life, talk about medical herbs such as arnica and mention the lush pastures of this rainy summer.
The Alpe Spullers is much more than just a workplace: it is a meeting place for alpine farmers and regular guests. Joint celebrations are held here regularly, such as the Alpine fair or the "Buabafescht" for all young herdsmen and women from the surrounding Alps. These events are highlights of the Alpine summer, which lasts from mid-June to the beginning of September.
For the five young shepherds who support Conny and Christian in their work, this time is a formative experience. Conny lovingly looks after the young helpers, almost as if they were her own children. They work hard, but also laugh a lot.
In the evenings, when the work is done, everyone sits together at the kitchen table, telling stories and jokes. Even late at night, while Conny is still preparing cream cheese for the next day, the atmosphere is cheerful. It is almost midnight when the day on the alp ends and everyone goes to bed - because the next day on the alp starts early.
