Three beautiful paths, one beautiful destination
Where green water and red rock inspire
Lake Formarin is particularly impressive early in the morning when the sun slowly rises and the lake is still hidden under a blanket of mist. The sky gradually brightens and the red band that gives the Rote Wand its name emerges clearly. But even at midday, when the sun shines directly on the lake, it reveals its beauty - the water then shimmers almost turquoise.
Lake Formarin is impressive at almost any time of day. There’s a reason it was officially named the most beautiful place in Austria in the ORF show “9 Places – 9 Treasures” back in 2015.
If you want to experience the lake at an altitude of almost 2,000 meters, you should lace up your hiking boots and set off. There are three different routes to reach Lake Formarin:
- One route starts in Dalaas. It then climbs almost 1,000 meters uphill, the admittedly somewhat steep path is broken up by benches and information boards on the "Stebok-Wäg" (ibex path). It is not called this for nothing - one of the largest ibex colonies in Europe lives around the Rote Wand.
- Another trail starts in Lech am Arlberg and leads to the lake in around five hours. The varied route runs leisurely along the still young and narrow Lech.
- The trail from the Großes Walsertal biosphere reserve is also an option. It leads from Alpe Laguz or Alpe Klesenza directly past the imposing Rote Wand.
All these paths have a common goal: "For us the most beautiful place in the world."
