Magical moments in the moonlight
A winter evening full of silence and contemplation
It is a cold, clear winter evening in the Großes Walsertal and the full moon casts a pleasant light on the snow-covered slopes. The "Sun, Moon and Snow" event is on the agenda today and Anna and I have been looking forward to it for a long time. We're not fans of the hustle and bustle or crowded slopes, but are looking for something special, something quiet - which is exactly what this evening promises.
The valley station of the Sonntag-Stein cable car is pleasantly quiet. The few people who have found their way here this evening seem to be looking for a moment of peace, just like us. The cable car takes us quietly up to the top, and the view of the moonlit valley below is impressive - but in an unobtrusive, almost calming way.
Once at the top, we set off on foot with the toboggan in tow. The path ahead is gently ascending and lit only by moonlight. It's amazing how easy it is to find your way without artificial light. The darkness is not threatening, but invites you to pay attention to every sound that breaks the silence - a soft crunching of the snow, an occasional rustling of the trees in the wind.
The ascent is quiet and leisurely. Anna and I don't talk much, each of us is lost in thought, enjoying the clear, fresh air and the unusual silence. On this night, nature shows its quiet, almost contemplative side, and we are happy to embrace it.
Once we arrive at the inn, we are greeted by a cozy, warm room. The aroma of freshly prepared soup and hot tea welcomes us and we look forward to a well-earned break. We enjoy our meal and warm up before heading back out into the freezing cold night - good clothing is essential on such clear evenings.
We now make our way back with the toboggans we brought with us. The descent through the moonlit forest is a peaceful yet exciting experience. The snow glistens in the soft light and the gentle sound of the runners in the snow adds to the peaceful atmosphere. It's not about speed here, but about enjoying nature to the full - without distraction, without haste.
When we arrive back at the valley station, we feel refreshed and calm. This evening was not spectacular in the conventional sense, but was special precisely because of its simplicity and closeness to nature. It is exactly what we were looking for - an experience that shows us how beneficial and fulfilling it can be to concentrate on the essentials.
We will certainly take this feeling of being in harmony with nature and ourselves into our everyday lives - and perhaps remember this quiet, clear winter evening in the Großes Walsertal for a long time to come.
