Childhood memories in the snow
Why the small, fine ski area in the Großes Walsertal biosphere reserve is still the perfect retreat for winter lovers
When I think back to my childhood, I remember the winter days in Sonntag-Stein. It was always a highlight when Dad, my brother and I packed up our skis and set off. The cable car, that took us to the ski area was the first adventure for us children - it floated leisurely over the valley and once we reached the top, a silent, white world awaited us.
Sonntag-Stein was always so close that we were often only there for half a day. There was no need to plan a whole day - that's what made it so special. No stress, no crowds, no long waiting times. The red descent was our test of courage. It challenged me every time anew. But the gentler blue slope was also always there when I wanted to take it easy.
Even today, when I come back, the feeling from back then hasn't changed. The chairlift, the two runs, the huts - everything feels familiar. The toboggan run is still a highlight for families and the winter hiking trail offers wonderful views that are deeply engraved in my memory. It's a small, fine ski resort hidden away from the big crowds, which is precisely why it's so special.
Sonntag-Stein has taught me that it's not about the size of the ski resort in winter, but about the experience. A place that slows me down every time and shows me how simple winter can be.
