Mountainbiking in the Großes Walsertal

Meet bike guide Markus

Markus' decision to become a bike guide was the result of a growing passion. He started his mountain bike career in smaller races, with a focus on uphill sections. But when he discovered the fascination of single trails - narrow, challenging paths that wind their way through nature - he knew he wanted to share this experience with others. This ultimately led him to train as a bike guide.

Markus has been passionate about cycling since his youth, especially in his home region, the Großes Walsertal. The mountainbike was his constant companion for exploring the alpine landscape. Today, he also enjoys riding his racing bike, but mountain biking remains his greatest passion. Markus works as a technical editor, but in his free time he devotes himself entirely to sport, nature and his family.

Markus is particularly happy that his partner of three years has shared his passion for mountain biking with him and that she doesn't mind exploring new routes, even if that sometimes means extra kilometers and meters of altitude.

Mountain biking in the Großes Walsertal is something very special for Markus. The diverse routes and the sometimes steep passages offer challenges and are rewarded with breathtaking views. One of his favorite routes is the tour around the Breithorn, a day tour that offers varied landscapes and great places to stop for refreshments. A highlight of this route is Garmil:

"The view is brilliant. No matter which side you come from, the reward is always the same: a great descent."

Away from biking, Markus has another favorite place in the Großes Walsertal: Bad Rothenbrunnen in Buchboden and the Gadental.

"This picturesque place exudes tranquillity, and the alpine inn there is the perfect place to stop for a bite to eat."

Markus' tips

For beginners on the trails, Markus recommends familiarizing yourself with the bike beforehand and putting safety first. For experienced bikers, he recommends the 2-Alps tour in St. Gerold, especially the single trail between the Gaßneralpe and the Plansott Alpe. And no matter which trail you are on, consideration for hikers and agricultural machinery is a must.

"If you're on a single trail and encounter hikers, you should move to the side and dismount if necessary. This can sometimes lead to a friendly chat."

Markus is convinced that mountainbiking is not just about the sporting challenge, but also about experiencing nature together. For him, there is nothing better than sharing his enthusiasm with others on the trails of the Großes Walsertal - a passion that he wants to pass on for many years to come.
